How Do I Know When to Call the HVAC Experts?

When to Call the HVAC ExpertsWith making any home repairs, you need to calculate the cost of trying to do it yourself versus the cost of hiring a professional. Some things are easy – a trip down to the hardware store and a quick Internet search can give you answers to most small household problems. But when expensive equipment is involved – like with your HVAC system – your time and money may be better spent calling in a pro. So, to save you a little more time, here are some examples of when to call in the HVAC experts.

1. It’s Been A Long Time Since A Professional Checked It

If you can’t remember the last time you got a routine maintenance check on your HVAC system, now is the time to call. Just like with a car – or even our own bodies – you need to see a professional every once in a while to make sure everything is still running OK. Regular care is preventive care. It can help your HVAC perform better, last longer, and will save you time and money in the long run. We recommend getting it inspected at least once a year – although twice a year (at the start of the heating and cooling seasons) is even better.

2. Things Aren’t Running

This may seem like the most obvious time to call an HVAC expert, but when you turn on your system and nothing happens, there are a few easy things you can do yourself before you call a pro.
  • Check The Thermostat—It could be on the wrong setting (heat vs. cool) or even set at the wrong temperature, which won’t allow it to turn on until there is a difference between the thermostat setting and the actual indoor temperature.

  • Check The Circuit Breakers/Fuse Box—Taking a look at the breakers and switches can save you some time and money on a service visit if it’s just a simple flip of the lever. No need to bring in a technician for that, but if there is an electrical issue, you would need to hire a pro anyway. It’s not likely to go away on its own and can be a safety concern if you notice power issues continue to happen in your home.

3. Your Bills Are Higher Than Normal

If your energy bills are higher than usual, it can be a sign that something could be wrong with your HVAC system. Maybe your unit isn’t getting proper airflow and a dirty filter is causing it to run less efficiently, or perhaps it could even be a bigger issue like a refrigerant leak or bad valves, coils or fittings. Either way, high bills are a good reason to call an HVAC pro and get it taken care of so you can start saving more money.

4. You Notice Weird Noises Or Leaks

If you hear clanging, banging, or any other strange noises coming from your system, a branch or stick could have fallen into the outdoor unit and is being hit by the fan blade.  You can turn the power off to clear the obstruction yourself, and as long as the fan blade isn’t bent, you’ve taken care of the issue. This is the case with most simple AC problems.
However, if you hear other noises that sound like squeaking or hissing, or notice water or other fluids leaking from your unit, that’s a good indicator to call an expert. A technician can see if you have a bad belt, coil, gasket, or rotted/ rusted parts that need replacing.

If you think your HVAC isn’t running to its optimal potential, the team of professionals at want to help you find a solution and get your system to where it needs to be to keep you comfortable.
