Minnesota Weather Fun Facts

Our summers in Minnesota never last as long as we’d like. We wait about eight months for warmer temperatures to return and then we sometimes tend to complain when things get too hot! Air conditioning is almost a necessity in some stretches of the summer. While we’re waiting for those warmer temperatures to really kick in, hear about some fun temperature and weather facts.

Minnesota Weather Fun Facts:

  • The hottest temperature ever recorded was 114 F in Moorhead, Minnesota in 1936, while the coldest was -60 F in Tower, Minnesota the same year.
  • If you're looking to make the warmest location in Minnesota your home, then head to Winona to find the highest average annual temperature.
  • Historically and statistically, June is the month of greatest frequency of tornadoes. But the earliest verified tornado occurred in March just north of Truman and the latest in Maple Plan in mid-November.
  • The areas near Lake Superior have weather unique from the rest of the state. The moderating effect of Lake Superior keeps the surrounding area relatively cooler in the summer and relatively warmer in the winter, giving that region a smaller yearly temperature range.
  • The summer months of June, July, August, and September account for nearly half of the annual precipitation total across the state of Minnesota.

We love the long days, warm temperatures, outdoor activities and green grass of summer. But, what most Minnesotans love about our state is the true experience of all four different seasons. Let’s enjoy summer while we can because fall will be here soon enough!
